Jam of the Day – Childish Gambino is Drunk on Love

Childish Gambino released his new mixtape STN MTN on October 2, and his EP Kauai the very next day. On “Sober,” a stripped down slow jam, Gambino shows off his singing chops. Gambino, the alter-ego of actor and comedian Donald Glover, will play at the Austin City Limits Music Festival this Friday and he will be here in NYC on October 30th at the Barclay’s Center for Power 105.1’s Powerhouse.

Jam(s) of the Day – Alt-J is All Yours

We here at EV2BK can’t stop listening to the new release from Alt-J, This is All Yours. As a follow up to their 2012 debut, An Awesome Wave, this new album is remarkable. It’s at times haunting and strange and at others progressive and though-provoking. Regardless of the lackluster Pitchfork review yesterday, their ascent continues. They are playing sold out shows across Europe this month and, unfortunately for those who didn’t get tickets early, their show here in NYC at the Beacon is already sold out too!

Although drummer Thom Green quipped about “Left Hand Free” in a Guardian interview saying “I tried to make the drums as clichéd as possible,” the track is extremely catchy so I’m sure they will be laughing about that cliche all the way to the bank.

Jam of the Day – Thao & The Get Down Stay Down Are Anything But Common

San Francisco band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down released their new album, We The Common, this week, on Ribbon Music. The title track, “We The Common,” with it’s jangly clattering folk sound and smoky vocals, will hook you right away. Their tour to promote the new album will hit NYC in March, with shows at The Bowery Ballroom on March 22nd and at The Bell House on March 25th.

Jam of the Day – Fort Lean “All The Lights”

If the promo material is to be believed, Fort Lean is a place you can go. But it’s also a place that isn’t quite sure about its audience yet, a place that is really shaping up and starting to look and feel pretty solid after two EPs but also belies an underlying uncertainty about opening day. The group’s most recent effort, Change Your Name, was produced by Patrick Wemberly from Chairlift, who lends a steady hand throughout. “All the Lights” is a highlight for the band and especially singer Keenan Mitchell, and we can’t wait for the full length.

Jam of the Day – Junip Provides Ambient Mood for Subarctic Climes

Swedish Folk Band Junip released their first full-length album, Fields, back in 2010. In December, the band announced that they will release a new self titled album this April. The song progression in Fields really builds and is worth a full listen here. “Howl” is one of my favorite tracks. Their sound has a haunting, seventies feel, even drawing recent comparisons to Cat Stevens from The New York Times.

Their new single, “Line of Fire,” from the upcoming album is available from free download on their website. So get inside, grab a glass of red wine and have a listen!
