Jam of the Day – Young Buffalo Stomp a Catapilah

On this first single from Young Buffalo, you might think you’ve stumbled onto a lost Weezer track from the 90s, but only until the chorus hits you over the head and says “Quit it stupid, this sounds amazing, or at least like Fleet Foxes.” I can’t get this track out of my head!

The video and mp3 are below for your enjoyment. Wait for the butterfly!

Live Music – Slam Donahue and (The) Tony Castles at Pianos for Headless Horseman Residency

For the second week of the Headless Horeseman residency at Pianos this month, Greedhead Entertainment and PopGun Booking really present a great lineup, probably the best of the three week residency. Apart from HDLSS, ambient pop darlings (The) Tony Castles will perform with MBAR and up and coming force Slam Donahue (don’t miss them, they play early but will be worth it), with a DJ set from BRAHMS.

As a preview, here’s a video of the opening band, Slam Donahue, performing at Cake Shop a couple weeks ago. They play at 8, so come to the show early and get down on the dance floor!

Jam of the Day – New Pants and Trips to France

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger was formed in 2008 by Sean Lennon and his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl. Recently, they have been touring on the west coast and have performed their single “Jardin du Luxemborg” on Conan and Jimmy Fallon. Their latest album Acoustic Sessions, released in late October 2010 through their own label, Chimera Music, has a soft and dreamy 60s folk sound. Lennon’s familiar vocal lilt may, as the song says, inspire you to “Put on your new pants and move out to France.” In an interview with the LA Times, the duo explained “Our music is an extension of our relationship. The stuff we create is just a glimpse of an ongoing conversation between us.”

Sean Lennon is performing tonight at the East Village non-profit performance space The Stone in “Consortium Musicum” with Greg Saunier of Deerhoof.

Jam of the Day – Adele Goes for a Roll in the Deep

Today’s Jam comes to us from the new Adele album, 21, which is set to release in the US on February 22nd and has already hit No.1 in the first week of its release in the UK. This is only the second album from Adele, who won two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009 for her debut album, 19. The stellar album can be heard in it’s entirety on NPR’s First Listen. The first track, “Rolling In The Deep,” starts with an arresting chorus that is easy to get swept up into. It’s an excellent starting point for the affecting album, setting the tone for her tales of heartbreak and lost love. She says that both of her albums are about boys and although the subject matter is fairly normal, common even, the voice she tells them in is a powerful force that strikes an emotional chord right from the start. She recently told AOL’s “Sessions” that she “never, ever bothered to dream about being a professional singer” not thinking that her voice ranked among her heroes, Etta James and Aretha Franklin (to name a few). Though those are some lofty heights to reach, I’d say she’s got the potential to get there soon.

Jam of the Day – A Second Chance for PB & J

For the last week or so we here at EV2BK have been seriously getting down to “Second Chance” the new single from the forthcoming Peter Bjorn & John album, Gimmie Some. “This time around we had the clear idea of going back to basics–guitar, bass, drums,” Peter (Moren) recently told SPIN. To promote their sixth LP, set to be released in late March, the Swedish trio played their first US show last week for a crowd of 150 people in the tiny basement venue at Santos Party House. PB & J performed the song last night on Conan and you can watch the live performance here, but the recorded version is even more rocking.
