EV2BK Nightlife Preview – The Draft and Billy Hurricane’s

For those of you who will be in and around the East Village this weekend, there are two new bars to check out with very different vibes.

The Draft

First up is The Draft, a brand new 1920’s-style sports bar taking over the space formerly occupied by The Blue Seats. Owners Kendra and Natasha are preparing for the soft-opening of the bar tonight and promise a “relaxed neighborhood sports bar” vibe. The 22 flat screens from The Blue Seats are still there, but the booths have been removed to allow for a more informal setting and a lot more standing room (as the venue is on the small to tiny scale). The proud new owners first met 12 years ago as bartenders at Bulls Head Tavern in Gramercy and are very excited to finally have a place of their own. The Draft offers a sizable menu with everything from pizza to wienies, sliders, and wings. Cocktails range from $6 to $12, and carry 1920s era themed names like “Gams,” Bee’s Knees,” “Putting on the Ritz,” “On The Lamb,” and “The Real McCoy.”

Billy Hurricane’s

The bright orange sign of Billy Hurricane’s on Avenue B has been heralding the new bar’s arrival for some time. With the Grand Opening yesterday, the wait was finally over. The concern about the frat-boy appeal of this “Mardis Gras-themed” bar in the former Rehab/ Midway Rock Club space that describes itself as a “speakeasy downstairs and a speakloudly upstairs” may be deserved, but whatever their clientele, Billy’s was certainly packing them in last night with crowds gathering in the sizable venue and spilling out onto the sidewalk. When EV2BK was there, the place was still heating up but the bright lights and over-sized wall decor was certainly an overhaul of the formerly dank space. It could be annoying or it could be fun, we’ll have to wait and see what the weekend holds.

The Draft, 157 Ludlow Street (between Rivington and Stanton)
Billy Hurricane’s, 25 Avenue B (between 2nd and 3rd)

Jam of the Day – Tony Castles at the Pool Party

Yesterday, (The) Tony Castles released the video for their first single, “Black Girls in Dresses,” from the band’s forthcoming No Service EP, out September 21 on Famous Class Records. The video was directed by Jordan Fish (who also directed Das Racist’s “Rainbow in the Dark” video), and the EP was produced by Jake Aron (Jamie Lidell, Yeasayer, Chairlift).

We are really digging their sound and also wondering what went down with that watermelon Paul walks into the party with. In keeping with the “pool party” theme of the video, the band is throwing a record release party tomorrow night at Union Pool before heading out on their fall tour with Tom Tom Club. Free watermelon slices for everyone!

Jam of the Day – Now I Want to Go to Mexico Too

The five member band Vadoinmessico describes their international sound as “Mediterranean alternative folk with a bit of psychedelic rock thrown in the mix.” Band members hail from Italy, Mexico, Austria, and England and they are currently based in London. Their uplifting sound seems nostalgic and joyful at once, as if they are embarking on a long-awaited vacation or returning home. The name Vadoinmessico translates to “I am going to Mexico” in Italian so I am probably not far off. They sound a bit like Vampire Weekend, true, but with less of a nod to (rip-off of?) Paul Simon.

Although the video follows a pair of cats, and normally all internet videos featuring cats should be avoided, this is non-cutesy enough to be worth the three minutes. The video’s director, Kent Hugo, works with real world images, drawings, and cutouts to create a continuously shifting work of art. Vadoinmessico performed at SXSW back in March, and even scored a spot at NPR’s Tiny SXSW concert. They don’t appear to have any upcoming shows outside of the UK soon, but we’ll keep you posted when we hear otherwise.

Jam of the Day – New Dress for Kanye West

Kanye West has been making some MOVES recently, dropping a new track off his forthcoming LP every Friday as part of his G.O.O.D. Fridays project (all of which can be found here). Last week brought probably the most soulful and hottest track thus far, “Devil in a New Dress,” which is available for free download once his site is back up (as of posting, both www.kanyeuniversecity.com and www.kanyewest.com are “UNDER CONSTRUCTION”).

Anyone would sound good over this beat, produced by Bink!.

EV2BK Bangin Beach & BBQ Playlist 2010 – #16-20

Well, summer is almost over and there’s one long weekend left to get your BBQ and Beach on. So here’s a final installment of the Bangin Beach & BBQ Playlist 2010. Have fun out there everyone.

16) Genesis – I Can’t Dance:

Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year for their many musical contributions and fans (they’ve sold over 150 million records worldwide since they formed in the late 60s), and this track from We Can’t Dance (Phil Collin’s last studio album with the band) was one of their most commercially successful. The video reminds me of my parents and their friends doing funny dances in our living room during the summer. And also that beach scene with the dog is kind of funny.

17)Twin Shadow – I Can’t Wait:

I know we recently posted about Twin Shadow but this track, “I Can’t Wait,” is perfect for an end of summer mix. Even though George Lewis Jr.’s lyrics are “I cannot wait for summer/I cannot wait for June,” there’s a melancholic longing in his voice that speaks more of memories and regrets from a summer spent than a season just beginning. Either way, the track is required listening.

And while you’re at it, check out Gordon Voidwell’s remix of the same track (via Rcrd Lbl):

18) LCD Soundsystem – Daft Punk Is Playing at My House:

Yeah, we get it James Murphy, you’re really cool and hip and are bringing/brought disco back. Please invite us next time.

19)Kanye West – What It Do/What It Is

GET THAT FRENCH HORN AND YOUR BOOTY TO THE DANCE FLOOR. “PRESS GO!”

20) Big Boi ft. Vonnegutt – Follow Us:

Now that Big Boi from Outkast was finally able to resolve all these issues with Jive Records and release his solo record Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, I’ve got to say that the record has an abundant selection of dope tracks (with a few missteps along the way). Does anyone else thing that the singer from Vonnegutt sounds a lot like Cale Parks? I want a BRAHMS remix.

Jam of The Day – Twin Shadow Slows it Down

In the waning days of summer, we’re all looking for a new band to get excited about. Am I right? Enter Twin Shadow. Twin Shadow’s debut EP was released by Grizzly Bear’s own Chris Taylor via his quickly growing Terrible Records label. “Slow” is my favorite track so far and it’s available for free download here. The video’s 70s-porn look and frequent pans down the front of Lewis’s jeans earned it a NSFW tag but I don’t agree, there’s just a hint seductive 70s sleaze. If you’re as impressed with his “big talent” as the videographer heard on “Slow” is, upcoming shows in NYC include two nights at Glasslands Gallery in September and one at Le Poisson Rouge. See you there.
