Aussie BBQ Tomorrow Night

We hope you don’t have any plans for tomorrow because the Aussie BBQ will be in full swing at The Bell House in Brooklyn. The showcase features a musically diverse collection of artists who all call Australia home. The Aussie BBQ has grown to be a major showcase at SXSW and last year branched out to include shows in Los Angeles and New York for the first time. The lineup is extensive so here are the acts you shouldn’t miss:

The dreamy, melodic sounds of Crayon Fields will be early in the evening. This young band has and artful pop sound and has been getting a lot of attention on the airwaves in Australia.

Oh Mercy could have poached their name from Bob Dylan’s 26th studio album, released in the late eighties, right around the time that the band’s members were probably born. There is something simple and compelling about their sound that could be great live.

Love Of Diagrams is a surf-pop punk band that is supposed to have a great, energetic live show. They are set to play more NYC shows this spring at Santos Party House and as part of a Death by Audio showcase.

Sherlock’s Daughter seem to be Australia’s answer to The Dirty Projectors. Last year they won the 2009 Sydney Music Arts & Culture award for ‘Next Big Thing’ and I think that we’re sure to hear a lot more from them state-side very soon. They’re my pick to steal the show.

Jam of the Day – So Fine Tonight

We’re psyched to be heading to the Julian Casablancas show tonight at Terminal 5. His debut solo album rocks and is arguably one the best albums of 2009. Hopefully, we will have some fun news to report about the show (or some good videos) so check back next week. I’m also excited to see their second opening act, Telepathe. I’m intrigued to see how their dark, new-age sound translates at a live show. Today’s jam, “So Fine,” is the first track off their debut album, Dance Mother, produced by TV on the Radio‘s Dave Sitek.

Jam of the Day – Can You Stand the Hot Rats?

For today’s Jam, we wanted to bring you a little preview of a band set to play two shows next week, one in the EV/ Lower East Side and one in BK. The Hot Rats, a British band formed by vocalist and guitarist Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Goffey, are a self-proclaimed “psychedelic punk” band. They will be playing their first show in BK at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 12th and their second at the Bowery Ballroom on January 14th. Coombes and Goffey, who are two-thirds of the nineties British pop-rock group Supergrass, most likely took their band name from Hot Rats, the second solo album by Frank Zappa. They are currently working with mega-producer Nigel Godrich, who has produced albums for Beck and Radiohead, on their upcoming album of cover versions of songs by various iconic artists– including The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, the Beastie Boys, and the Sex Pistols. If their adrenaline-fueled cover of The Velvet Underground‘s “Can’t Stand It” is any indication, they are being pretty clever with their reinterpretations of these songs. Their cover of “Drive My Car” by the Beatles is also worth a listen. If you like what you hear, check them out live next week.

EV2BK Live Music – Animal Hands

We checked out Animal Hands in late September and they put on a really stellar show. They recently released their Suntan EP and their new album Unrealists is coming out soon. Here are two videos from the night that are up on the EV2BK.com Youtube channel now. Because the sound quality isn’t perfect, I included the recorded versions below each, which the boys of Animal Hands were nice enough to provide us with. We can’t wait to see these guys again, they are playing this Friday at 8 at Union Hall w/ Marcellus Hall and Jirapah so if you like what you hear, head on over and check them out.

Jam of the Day – Lissie Brings a Little Lovin’

Illinois crooner Lissie Maurus, playing the early show tonight at the Mercury Lounge, is set to release her debut EP, Why You Runnin’, tomorrow on Fat Possum Records. Her song titles may be abbreviated and folksy but her talent’s not. Her first single “Little Lovin'” starts as a simple, sweet song and builds on its Midwestern bluegrass undertones to become surprisingly complex. The EP was produced by Bill Reynolds, the bassist in Band of Horses. Lissie will be opening for Ray Lamontagne on a bunch of his tour dates coming up in Illinois and in California.

This live version of “Little Lovin'” is from the her performance at the Troubadour in L.A. back in October. It’s pretty good but for the recorded version, you can check out her MySpace page.
