EV2BK Bangin Beach & BBQ Playlist 2010 – #16-20

Well, summer is almost over and there’s one long weekend left to get your BBQ and Beach on. So here’s a final installment of the Bangin Beach & BBQ Playlist 2010. Have fun out there everyone.

16) Genesis – I Can’t Dance:

Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year for their many musical contributions and fans (they’ve sold over 150 million records worldwide since they formed in the late 60s), and this track from We Can’t Dance (Phil Collin’s last studio album with the band) was one of their most commercially successful. The video reminds me of my parents and their friends doing funny dances in our living room during the summer. And also that beach scene with the dog is kind of funny.

17)Twin Shadow – I Can’t Wait:

I know we recently posted about Twin Shadow but this track, “I Can’t Wait,” is perfect for an end of summer mix. Even though George Lewis Jr.’s lyrics are “I cannot wait for summer/I cannot wait for June,” there’s a melancholic longing in his voice that speaks more of memories and regrets from a summer spent than a season just beginning. Either way, the track is required listening.

And while you’re at it, check out Gordon Voidwell’s remix of the same track (via Rcrd Lbl):

18) LCD Soundsystem – Daft Punk Is Playing at My House:

Yeah, we get it James Murphy, you’re really cool and hip and are bringing/brought disco back. Please invite us next time.

19)Kanye West – What It Do/What It Is

GET THAT FRENCH HORN AND YOUR BOOTY TO THE DANCE FLOOR. “PRESS GO!”

20) Big Boi ft. Vonnegutt – Follow Us:

Now that Big Boi from Outkast was finally able to resolve all these issues with Jive Records and release his solo record Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, I’ve got to say that the record has an abundant selection of dope tracks (with a few missteps along the way). Does anyone else thing that the singer from Vonnegutt sounds a lot like Cale Parks? I want a BRAHMS remix.

Jam of The Day – Twin Shadow Slows it Down

In the waning days of summer, we’re all looking for a new band to get excited about. Am I right? Enter Twin Shadow. Twin Shadow’s debut EP was released by Grizzly Bear’s own Chris Taylor via his quickly growing Terrible Records label. “Slow” is my favorite track so far and it’s available for free download here. The video’s 70s-porn look and frequent pans down the front of Lewis’s jeans earned it a NSFW tag but I don’t agree, there’s just a hint seductive 70s sleaze. If you’re as impressed with his “big talent” as the videographer heard on “Slow” is, upcoming shows in NYC include two nights at Glasslands Gallery in September and one at Le Poisson Rouge. See you there.

EV2BK Live Music – (The) Tony Castles at Mercury Lounge

On August 5, 2010, Brooklyn up-and-comers (The) Tony Castles played a great set at Mercury Lounge, sharing the stage with Mon Khmer and Monogold and out-playing them both. Here’s a slide show of Paul, Gabbi, and Willie all rocking new suits and getting down:

No, it’s not Don Johnson you see, but rather (The) Tony Castles drummer Gabbi Wurzel. Also, in more Tony Castles suit-news, keep an eye out for the upcoming video release for the first single, where the suits will be making their screen debut. And don’t forget to make it out to the band’s September 17 record release party at Union Pool, before their fall tour with Tom Tom Club!
