Jam of the Day – Bowery Ballroom Sold Out of Jetpacks

If you’ve never had a chance to check out the great Scottish band We Were Promised Jet Packs, well, it might still be tough, considering their show tonight at the Bowery Ballroom (with Bad Veins) is sold out. We Were Promised Jetpacks have come a long way since their initial days playing at their school’s “Battle of the Bands,” as their record deal with Fat Cat Records back in 2008 clearly underscores (joining a roster of artists that includes their former touring partners and friends Frightened Rabbit).

The band returns to Brooklyn to play the Knitting Factory on February 15, before continuing on its tour across the country, so if you don’t already have tickets tonight, there’s always next week. But if you happen to live on the West coast, be sure to check them out when Bear Hands joins the tour starting in Phoenix on February 23.

“Roll Up Your Sleeves” is the second single off their first LP, These Four Walls, which was released last summer.

Jam of the Day – Brahms in Bushwick

No, we aren’t referring to Johannes, the super famous Romantic period composer, but rather the new band Brahms based in Brooklyn. Building on the “electro-pop” sound of his recent solo work, Cale Parks formed this new band with Eric Lyle Lodwick and Drew Montag Robinson (who were already playing live with him recently) for the new year, and they have been getting some great buzz after their recent shows including one at Glasslands a couple of weeks ago with Boy Crisis, Telepathe, and Apache Beat:

Brahms is playing again tonight at Tandem in Bushwick, as part of The Sky Report Winter Showcase.

But if you can’t make it to the show, you can download two demos from the band’s website, for the price of your email address. So go over there and do it, you will like what you hear. In fact, here’s one of the jams right now, just to prove it to you.

Jam of the Day – We Promise Not to Tell

Does anyone else remember this song and totally love it? Taylor Dayne hasn’t done all that much musically since the late 80s/early 90s (although her single “Beautiful,” from her 2008 release Satisfied, did manage to reach #1 on the Billboard Dance Charts). But this song rules! And she’s not looking too bad for an almost-50-year-old mom. So come on, dance it out to “Tell It To My Heart” tonight. We promise not to tell.

Plus, the beginning of this video is like a master class on how to make an 80s video.

EV2BK Live Music – Julian Casablancas at Terminal 5

We checked out the Julian Casablancas show on January 15th at Terminal 5 and it was really great, one of the best shows we’ve seen in a while. His songs were tight, the energy was high, and the cavernous venue was packed. Although the show was pretty dark for the most part, we did manage to take a few videos and photos:

The best video is below, when he finished his set with his cover of Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz‘s forgotten SNL gem, “I Wish it Was Christmas Today.” You can also watch this and others on the EV2BK Youtube channel.

Jam of the Day – Arctic Monkeys On the Brain

I woke up with this song in my head today although I’m not really sure why, since it’s been years since the Arctic Monkeys released their first EP. Their most recent release, 2009’s Humbug (out on Domino), has received some good reviews and it’s definitely worth checking out, but I’m still feeling this “Fake Tales of San Francisco” track four years later.

EV2BK Live Music – Bear Hands Perform “What a Drag” at Cantora Records

Earlier tonight we attended what was essentially a live listening party for Bear Hands’ new single “What a Drag” at the Cantora Records studios in Brooklyn. “What A Drag” will be released in the U.S. by Cantora on February 16th, and will feature “Can’t Stick Em” as the b-side, available as a limited edition white 7″ vinyl and digitally via iTunes and the like. Bear Hands have been working on a new LP for a while now, and from what we hear it’s pretty much finished at this point, so this single release will serve as an entree to the LP at some point later this year (fingers crossed).

In any case, Bear Hands played a nice little six song set in a room built up with paper flowers and huge hanging lamps, ending with this nice rendition of the soon-to-be-major “What a Drag.” Have a listen! And if you want to download the tracks or buy the 7″, check out the newly redesigned Bear Hands website.
