EV2BK Interviews Common Prayer

We talked with Jason Sebastian Russo and Alexandra Marvar of Common Prayer before they kicked-off their first official UK tour and asked them a few questions about their EP, their performances at the Truck Festivals, and their favorite venues in NYC.

EV2BK – Your debut album, There is A Mountain, just came out digitally here in early June. How long did the album take to put together?
Common Prayer – (Russo) It took a lifetime to write, but 6 days to record. We did 95 % of the tracking in a barn in a small English village then brought it back to Brooklyn to mix. Which we did in 2 days, max.
(Marvar) And then I sang into a mic set up in Jason’s bedroom in Greenpoint. That took… a couple hours. Though yes, there were years of unwitting subconscious preparation for both parties I’m sure.

EV2BK – We love the off-kilter Americana sound of “Us vs. Them.” What inspired the song?
Common Prayer – (Russo) This song was inspired by the most time-honored tradition in pop music, failed love.
(Marvar) It inspires me.

EV2BK – You guys have a big tour that kicks off very soon in the UK, is this your first tour across the pond?
Common Prayer – (Russo) Yes! Well, we played the 12th annual Truck Festival last year, but it was before we were called Common Prayer… This is our inaugural UK tour.
(Marvar) That said, the storage-container recording studio inside that cow barn on Hill Farm is already pretty familiar with us, and we’ll be visiting it again early in the tour for rehearsals with our English constituency and other shenanigans.
(Russo) We are very excited.
(Marvar) Fact.

EV2BK – What songs do you most look forward to playing when you perform?
Common Prayer – (Russo) My fave is “Marriage Song” because it has these bad-ass breaks that we do a three-part harmony over. Either that or Alex’s whistling solo at the end of “Us vs. Them.”
(Marvar) At times it is a whistling duo or trio, which I prefer. But my favorite is definitely also “Marriage Song,” because I get to bang on garbage and blow a marching band whistle.

EV2BK – You’re playing the Truck Festival in the UK again this year, and I know you played in the first US version of the festival, Truck America, earlier this year up in the Catskills—Can you tell us a little about that festival?
Common Prayer – (Russo) The folks that founded Truck fest (particularly two very musical brothers Joe and Robin Bennett) were instrumental in the making and recording of our album. We used the aforementioned barn studio on Hill Farm, also the site of the Truck Fest. The Truck Fest is a great example of a family-run “indie festival” — it’s held on a farm in a small, ancient village every year, all about community, with little to no corporate sponsorship… Rather grassroots.
(Marvar) This spring’s Truck America was it’s first venture on “patriot shores.” I have [an] apartment in Kingston, NY (near the Catskills), and Jason has significant ties to the music scene there as well, so we were likely suspects to help our friends at Truck bring their operation stateside. For year one, I’d have to call it a smashing success. Everyone from the Sadies to Mercury Rev to Here We Go Magic to… well… us.

EV2BK – Is there any band you are looking forward to meeting there or seeing again?
Common Prayer – (Russo) I like Fucked Up. I managed to be in a small room with the singer one late night and he is an smart entertaining guy. Also, I am looking forward to seeing my brothers band – The Silent League – because it’s always fun to see family in weird situations.
(Marvar) Since SxSW, I have become sort of obsessed with an electronic act called Active Child. Glad he will be present. Brooklyn’s own Holly Miranda will be around and even though we’ve never met I feel a kinship with her because we will be Brooklynites at Truck. Jason and I are also both excited to see Neil Halstead. He was our musical hero in the 90s and he is our UK record label hero in the now. We’re also playing a show with him in London right before Truck.

EV2BK – Jason, Common Prayer has a very different sound than your other band, Hopewell, what inspired the shift?
Common Prayer – (Russo) Hopewell has a lot of history – which is a positive thing – we’ve lasted longer than most bands ever dream of lasting, but I wanted to explore the songs that were coming out of me that wouldn’t fit in the trajectory of Hopewell. Common Prayer was the way I could manage to write whatever song came into my head, without worrying where I would put it or what I would do with it.

EV2BK – When is your next show in NYC and what has been your favorite venue to play at here so far?
Common Prayer – (Russo) Next up is a Johnny Leather showcase at either Union Hall or the Bellhouse, and then we are opening up for our pal Nicole Atkins in September at one of our favorite venues that we won’t mention yet because the bill is not yet all set.
(Marvar) Glasslands is one of our favorite venues. (Hint, hint!)

* * *

We’re looking forward to seeing Common Prayer this fall when they are back in NYC. In the meantime, we’ll see what we can do to put in a good word over at Glasslands.

EV2BK Bangin Beach and BBQ Playlist 2010 – #1-5

To kick off summer, and the 4th of July Weekend in a big way, EV2BK wants to introduce our Bangin Beach and BBQ Playlist 2010!

Over the next few days and weeks, we will add to the list, so keep checking back, but here’s a taste to whet your appetite and get some ideas percolating for your weekend BBQ jam selection.

#1) La Roux – In For The Kill:

To get things started right, we chose La Roux . La Roux has made major inroads into the US mainstream over the last year, and their hit single Bulletproof has been everywhere, even topping the UK charts in 2009. They will start a tour tomorrow that kicks off at RockWerchter2010. Other acts there will include The XX, Arcade Fire, The Black Keys, Phoenix, and many more. It sounds like a killer show, but unfortunately Werchter is a Belgian province near Brussles and it kicks off tomorrow so… no RockWerchter for you. La Roux has no NYC stops planned for the summer (the closest they’ll be is D.C.), so we’ll have to enjoy the tracks poolside instead. If this video doesn’t get you in the mood for the summertime heat (and inspire some awesome dance moves) then nothing will.

#2) Smashing Pumpkins – 1979:

Classic chilled out summer jam from 2005 by Smashing Pumpkins. Far better than this recent Passion Pit remix of “Tonight, Tonight,” let’s be real.

#3) Yeasayer – Madder Red:

We were sad to miss Yeasayer’s recent show as part of The Beach @ Governor’s Island summer concert series, but hear it was a blast. We’re sticking with their first release All Hour Cymbals as the band’s best work so far, but 2010’s Odd Blood definitely branches out into more danceable territory. Bump “Madder Red” to start the engine for your weekend road trip.

#4) The-Dream – Trilogy:

The-Dream is making some serious moves in the acting department with his video for “Trilogy” which includes songs from his pulsating third album Love King, which dropped yesterday. He opens the video with “Yamaha” for the first 4-minutes or so, where he is accompanied by the 2010 version of Robert Palmer’s girls and sounds a little like Prince. For the last 10 minutes (yes this is a long one) during “Nikki Pt. 2″ and “Abyss,” he stars in his own short film, complete with a dramatic narrative, one leading lady, and some creative camera work.

#5) The Morning Benders – Promises:

The Morning Benders have been included in heavy rotation in our offices ever since the foursome’s LP Big Echo came out earlier this year. Have you been listening to Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest for too long? Take it out. Put in Big Echo. Dance more than you used to and thank us later.

Jam of the Day – Big Pun Tribute for Valentine’s Day

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since the passing of Big Pun, one of my favorite rappers of all time. It’s also just as hard to believe how rad that Big Pun/Air Jordan image is right there (re-purposed from the original ad campaign promoting the posthumous release of Yeeeah Baby back in April 2000). But fortunately for all the Christopher Rios fans out there, the 10 year anniversary of his death has also led to a couple of great new tracks featuring previously unreleased material from the Bronx MC.

First up, we’ve got this updated version of “Glamour Life” (from Big Pun’s first record, Capital Punishment), which Big Pun’s son – BABY PUN – put out as a tribute to his dad on February 7, exactly 10 years after Big Pun’s death. If you listen to the original lyrics, Pun gives a shout out to his son in the original. And so it’s only fitting that Baby Pun should add a really nice verse to the remix, showcasing a style and flow that sounds like Big Punisher is spitting from the grave basically. This kid could turn into a major MC one day.

AC, Realm Reality, Termanology & Baby Pun (Big Pun’s son) – Glamour Life 2010 (Prod. By Jet Audio):

But the real treat is a whole tribute album of rarities, classics and remixes, which will be released for download tomorrow. From The Boombox:

The mix — compiled by DJ Soul and G Bo the Pro — is the brainchild of D.I.T.C. member Buckwild. The hip-hop producer, noted for his work on Pun’s ‘N—- S—,’ was eager to praise the platinum-selling Latino rapper’s works in the form of a compilation. After Buckwild met DJ Soul, who last year created a similar tribute project dedicated to fallen Harlem rapper Big L, the two began executing the project. “Pun doesn’t get the light that he deserves when they talk about great emcees,” DJ Soul tells The BoomBox. “But I initially didn’t want to do a Pun mix because there isn’t too much unreleased music out there. Everything that’s been recorded has pretty much been released. So [Buckwild] said what if he remixed some of the songs. I knew if we were to do this project it would have to be with Sean C.”

Sean C., Pun’s A&R during his tenure at Loud Records, and LV, both of Grind Music, join the fold of producers creating beats for the homage.

The tribute was originally supposed to be released on February 7. But to make up for the delay, DJ Soul has already posted one of the tracks on his blog, which you can check out right here, right now. And don’t forget to download the whole mix tomorrow!

Big Pun – Resurrection (Prod. by Sean C. and LV):

-Drew

P.S. You might not believe it, but my father actually saw Big Pun perform live in New Britain, Connecticut back in the late 90s, so Dad if you’re reading this and want to share any memories of the big guy, please drop a comment on the site!

***UPDATE***
From DJ Soul: @EV2BK The mix has been pushed as it is now being released on itunes with all of the proceeds going to Pun’s wife and kids

Jam of the Day – Hug a Tree or Sing to It

In a profile today in the Times, landscape architect turned “tree-hugger”, Scott Martin of Torrance, California explains his new Christmas tree rental service. His business is centered around the concept of delivering live, potted Christmas trees that are taken away and re-planted after the holiday is over. Mr. Martin, who delivered trees for a nursery as a teenager in California, explains “California is more attached to the green movement, so they are more willing to try this service here.” To rent a tree, you would visit his website, livingchristmas.com, pick out a tree from among several varieties, and schedule your delivery. Prices range from $50 to $185 depending on size and type of the tree and the recommended length of stay for a tree in a house is two-three weeks. One of the coolest thing about this service is that after the tree is picked up and re-planted, customers have the option of renting the same tree the following year so it may return taller. I don’t know how good that is for the tree, being uprooted and re-planted annually but it’s certainly better than chopping it down. I won’t be surprised if this business concept catches on around the country.

As we are just a week away from Christmas Eve, today marks the start of our week-long Holiday Jam of the Day series. We’re starting things off with a Christmas tree classic from A Charlie Brown Christmas. “O Tannenbaum”, originally a German song, has many versions and is often referred to as “Oh Christmas Tree” here in the U.S., but this is my favorite.
