Jam of the Day – Keep Knocking

Sometimes, you just need some funky soul in your life, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings want to give it to you. I guess I first heard about this group because the Dap Kings were playing on all these records all of a sudden about two years ago – Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, etc. – and they just have this really authentic funk sound. This sound is, in fact, purposefully crafted; the band only uses instruments that would have been available up until the 70s to create a genuine retro-soul vibe.

Sharon Jones just brings it hard to the mic, and in this song she’s really just telling all you player haters out there one thing: Back up OFF me. There is a time for other things and there is a time for making love, and this is not a time for distractions, it is a time for back breaking sex with my man, so just hold on damnit!

Special note to the ladies out there: this is a hot sentiment.

Jam of the Day – Chicken Sit-in

O Oprah, what have you done?

Yesterday Ms. Winfrey posted a coupon on her website that could be redeemed for “two pieces of KFC’s new grilled chicken, two sides, and a biscuit.” According to the Gothamist, this giveaway sparked at least two sit-in/riot incidents at separate KFC locations in Manhattan alone.

My first reaction, which remains largely unchanged, was to think, “Well this is just shameful people. Let’s pull ourselves together! It’s a piece of chicken, not gold bullion or something!” But then I heard two unmistakable voices whispering in my ear, urging me to reconsider my stance with this love ballad to fried chicken. You be the judge.

Jam of the Day – Oragami Harmonies

Fleet Foxes – Mykonos

I’m going to be honest, I love Fleet Foxes. They just sound so legit, like your mom and your local Kim’s Video employee (or other generic snooty indie hipster fill-in) would both agree that they’re a great band. I think it’s mostly those smooth Crosby Stills Nash & Young vocal harmonies that really get you hooked:

But who knew that they were so into oragami? A little strange, boys.

Send the link to your mom, Mother’s Day is coming up!

Jam of the Day – Greatest Story Never Told?

Saigon – The Rules (Prod. by Statik Selektah)

This Saigon character is a bit difficult to figure out. First he gets some help from Mark Ronson. Then he’s on Entourage, playing himself and building a following. Turtle was his manager. He was all set to blow up in 2005 with a purportedly dope record produced by Just Blaze (Jay-Z, Nas, etc. etc.), titled The Greatest Story Never Told.

But then it seems like he just started losing it and got caught up in this “some dude tried to steal my chain at a night club/I’ve got beef with Mobb Deep/I QUIT the rap game/psych I have a new mixtape/I’ve got beef with Joe Budden” garbage, and everyone got bored.

In any case, this song is admittedly hot and worth a listen (check out the Busta and Soulja Boy samples up in there..):

It’s available as a digital download only, and you can get it here. This album came out in March. Word is that The Greatest Story Never Told is still slated to come out soon, so the story (greatest or not) may yet be told.

Jam of the Day – Fowl Weather/Lovemaking by Candlelight

Led Zeppelin – Rain Song

This song is great for today: “springtime,” “rain song,” I mean come on. But then, you start to pay attention to the video… and you have to stop and wonder, what is going on here? Who shot this footage of geese, malards, and other fowl and decided, “Na, I’m staying in tonight in the edit room to match up these random bird clips to Led Zeppelin bro”? You might say, “Well, somebody’s got to do it,” but you would be wrong.

BONUS RAINY DAY SLOW JAM:
Boyz II Men – 50 Candles

You can’t really hear it on this live version (sorry, couldn’t find the album version), but the very beginning of the song opens with a crash of thunder and some soflty spoken incantations to “just sit tight girl” and various other ways to let you know that you are about to have sweet love made to you, all up over and around your living room, by Boyz II Men. Of course, such a scene requires an absurd amount of candles, but in this live performance the Boyz really want to make it clear that they are NOT fronting, so suddenly 50 real candles appear on stage! Enjoy it on this rainy Friday.
