Jam of the Day – You’ll Have to Work Harder in 2011

Well just like T-Pain, we took a break for a while and now we’re coming back SUPER BIG. This T-Mix of the Wiz Khalifa track “Black & Yellow” is the obvious favorite over the G-Mix, without question. When he says “every whip I do IT in, the rims’ super big,” you’re not sure if he’s talking about the proverbial “IT,” like he’s Will Smith getting jiggy with “it,” or whether he only gets busy in cars with rims 22″ or larger! Conundrum.

Wiz Khalifa ft. T-Pain – Black & Yellow (T-MIX):

But then WHOA. I check out this link from TheHairpin.com to an article about this absolutely amazing track from this 10-year-old named LYRIKKAL with the fire remix. She is killing it! And also saving for college, while taking mad dance classes and shit. “And yo I love ya’ll…back!”

LYRIKKAL – Pink & Purple:

Shout outs to HI-C (10% juice).

Jam of the Day – One More Drink and That Priest Might Renounce His Celebacy

Apparently (according to the Times article posted today), if you give the Rev. Henry Willenborg (or many other Roman Catholic priests) one more drink… then he might make sexual advances at a spirituality retreat that lead you to break off your marriage, have his baby, and then get into a decades-long struggle with the Franciscan higher ups over child support and confidentiality agreements! What ever happened to priestly celibacy? As if the Catholic Church hasn’t had enough sex scandals. This is getting into R. Kelly-level territory. But seriously, I went to a middle school run by Franciscan nuns, and don’t find this funny one bit. Keep it in your pants, dogg.

But it’s Friday night (“and I [am] feeling alright”). So you know what is funny and also sort of relevant? This video of “One More Drink” from Ludacris and T-Pain (with an appearance by Katt Williams). If this is a “Luda Service Announcement,” I look forward to more of those and less of these.

Jam(s) of the Day – Mapping Social Networks and Technology in the Rap Game

Yesterday a friend of mine out in San Francisco sent me a link to this song called “Hit Me On Twitter” by Mistah F.A.B., and it sent me off on a train of thought about the use of various social networking sites in recent rap jams. Even more broadly, it made me start to think about all of the songs that heavily feature some new, cool, technology in the chorus. Does this sort of usage cause a rise or decline in popularity of the social network/technology? Or does it only occur once the social network/technology has reached a certain societal saturation level? I honestly think that it might be possible to reconstruct the evolution of technology, and the popularity of that technoolgy within the culture, by “reading” rap songs.

I’m sure that this has already been contemplated by various stoned white dudes over the years, and I’m not about to try to get into it on a Thesis Paper level of research or detail, but here’s a couple of examples (in text or video) of what I’m getting at, starting with pagers, just to get the conversation started:

Big L – Lyric from “Ebonics”:

“Hit me on the hip means page me”

Lil Scrappy & G’$ Up – Cell Phone Watch:

J-Shin ft. T-Pain – Send Me an Email:

(Anyone who watches A Shot At Love on MTV will notice the Tila Tequila cameo in there)

Brandon T. Jackson ft. T-Pain (?) – What’s Yo Myspace:

(haha I love the part where he starts naming hot celebrity females that he wants to become friends with on Myspace: “Lindsay Lohan, put me in your Top 8!”…also this always comes up as T-Pain, but that just doesn’t sound right to me. Dude ALREADY has a song about emails… one is enough)

Mistah F.A.B. – Hit Me On Twitter:

And honestly, I compiled that list just off the top of the dome. I think this needs to be explored further. Someone want to call up Marcyliena Morgan at Harvard and get her on the case? I smell a best-seller here.

Know any other songs that would fit the bill? Then post it in the comments, already!

I Can’t Wait

Because we can’t wait to start writing:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

more about “Nu Shooz – I Can’t Wait“, posted with vodpod

P.S. Melissa posted our first blog (unbeknownst to me) before I figured out how to embed various video types. So this post doesn’t make as much sense any more. Oh well. I heard that Nu Shooz song last night on VH1 One Hit Wonders of the 80s or something, and felt the urgent need to post it. So it’s still going up.
